Horizontal Plastic Water Tank

A horizontal water tank lies on its side instead of standing upright. What Is a Horizontal Water Tank?

A horizontal tank is a cylinder-like vessel laid on its side with the filling opening on top. The body is moulded with ribs for strength and with moulded feet or saddles underneath, so it rests securely without any extra frame. Horizontal or Vertical: Which Is Better?

Both shapes store the same water, so the choice comes down to the space you have. Compare them like this:

• Height. A horizontal tank is low. At about 162 cm tall it fits under roofs, canopies, stair landings and in plant rooms where a tall vertical tank will not.
• Footprint. The trade-off is floor area. A horizontal tank covers more ground than a vertical tank of the same capacity, so it suits spaces with length to spare.
• Stability. The low centre of gravity and wide base make it very stable, which is useful in windy locations and on roofs.
• Access. Long, low tanks are often easier to move through side gates and along service lanes than a tall tank.

Material and Build

The tank is made of UV-stabilised polyethylene, a food-grade plastic that is safe for potable water. It does not rust, does not need painting, and resists the salts and minerals found in UAE water. Because strong sun is the main long-term stress on outdoor plastic, UV stabilisation is important. The tank comes with a 5-year warranty.

The Foundation: Do Not Skip It

A full 1,250 USG tank carries around 4,731 kg of water on top of its own weight, so the base is critical. The technical drawing specifies a foundation slab of about 250 cm by 181 cm, roughly 15 cm thick. That is a good rule for anyone planning the installation:

• Build a flat, level concrete slab slightly larger than the tank footprint.
• Check that the slab is level in both directions before the tank arrives.
• Let new concrete cure fully before placing a full tank on it.
• Remove sharp stones and debris from the surface.
• For rooftops, have an engineer confirm the structure can carry the load of the filled tank.

Installing in UAE Conditions

The UAE sun and heat shape good installation practice. Put the tank in shade where possible, because a tank in full summer sun warms the water and speeds up algae and bacterial growth. A simple shade structure or enclosure also protects the plastic and extends its life. Fit an overflow that drains safely away from the slab, and use a float valve on the inlet so the tank cannot over-fill. Add an isolation valve on the outlet, and a drain at the lowest point to make cleaning easier. Use flexible connectors at the tank walls and support the pipework separately, so the weight of the pipes is not carried by the tank.

Leave enough space around the tank for inspection and cleaning, ideally at least 60 cm on the access side. If your water arrives from a tanker, plan the inlet position so the delivery hose can reach it easily.

Cleaning and Maintenance

• Clean and disinfect the tank before first use, then at least once or twice a year.
• Keep the lid closed and in good condition to keep out dust, insects and light.
• Check the float valve, overflow and all fittings regularly for leaks.
• Do not pour hot or boiling water into the tank.
• Never drag the tank, and keep sharp objects away from the walls.
